They share similar views as Eliza towards faith and God.An old slave and the protagonist of the novel, Tom's two most prevalent qualities are his inherent goodness and piety. George will question his Christian faith and the power of God, but the Birds never will. Like Uncle Tom, the Birds will never give up their faith and will always do everything in their power to keep faith alive. She always sees the good Christian thing to do. Bird especially holds a strong faith and uses God in her argument to persuade her husband. At first, Senator Bird is not completely on board with the idea of taking the slaves in but then he sees that it is the right thing to do. Though they maintain a professional facade, their religious beliefs lead them to help slaves escape from the abusive south despite the law. Eliza, like the Bird's believes that if a person has faith and keeps that faith through hard times, then God will help them and protect them through those hard times. They tell Eliza, "put your trust in God he will protect you." Eliza and her son agree with this statement. The Bird's are a very religious people and this is why they help Eliza and her child. She uses her religion and compassion for people in order to persuade her husband. Bird is a very kind woman who is always open to helping people in need. He gave in because he is such a kind man and his wife knew that he would never be able to turn them down. Bird had gotten in an argument about taking in Eliza and her son and Senator Bird tried his best to do the politically correct thing even though he knew in his heart that these people needed him. "Now, if the truth must be told, our senator had the misfortune to be a man who had a particularly humane and accessible nature, and turning away anybody that what in trouble never had been his forte and what was worse for him in this particular pinch of the argument was, that his wife knew it, and, of course was making an assault on rather an indefensible point." Senator and Mrs. He was against helping the slaves at first but then he found the kindness within himself and saw that they were desperate even though it is considered a crime now. This vote was probably to keep his reputation up more than anything. Both of the Birds seem to be against slavery, despite the fact that Senator Bird helped past the Fugitive Slave Act.
